The Jelly’s Ferry Bridge project, orchestrated by Tehama County Public Works, boasts a collaborative team that combines the architectural and engineering expertise of T.Y. Lin International Group, the construction ability of MCM Construction as general contractor, and efficient construction management by Quincy Engineering. Folsom Ready Mix stands out as the designated concrete supplier for this initiative, delivering approximately 8,500 cubic yards of high-quality concrete. The project, located at 1805 Jelly’s Ferry Road, Red Bluff, CA 96080, covers 1,260 feet with a six-span structure, featuring two 12-foot driving lanes complemented by shoulders and bicycle paths. Notably, 10,000 lbs. of Davis Colors 51171 Buff pigment were added to the concrete to seamlessly blend into the surrounding landscape. The construction, spanning a duration of 32 months, reflects the commitment of this multifaceted team in successfully executing a project of this scale and complexity.
Challenges and Innovations:
The old Jelly’s Ferry Bridge, closed in 2018 due to safety concerns, posed limitations on heavy vehicle traffic, including semi-trucks. Recognizing the need for a more robust structure, the project incorporated innovative design elements to create a new bridge that allows for heavy vehicle traffic, specifically designed to support the weight of semi-trucks.
Environmental Considerations:
The Sacramento River, managed by the Bureau of Land Management, is crucial for salmon migration. The new bridge design included caissons arranged to facilitate salmon and fish migration, aligning with the Bureau’s efforts to create an Essential Fish Habitat.
Large diameter cast-in-drilled-hole (CIDH) piles were used for the caissons, showcasing a commitment to both structural integrity and environmental stewardship.

In terms of aesthetics, the bridge featured a stainless-steel fish inlay on the bridge soffit between Pier 2 and 3, as well as around Pier Column 5.
